Host fun-filled baby showers

Baby showers bring pure joy and happiness to many people - the expectant parents, the guests and certainly to you, the hostess! You, of course, have the responsibility for coming up with the right party ideas, themes and doing all the organizing to ensure that it is a truly successful event. Baby showers focus on the mom-to-be - it is her time to be pampered and made to feel like royalty. And the right party ideas can go a long way towards creating an outstanding, fun event.

Who gets invited to these celebrations? Traditionally, it used to be close female friends and family of the expectant mother. These days, things have changed quite a bit. Men attend showers as well, including friends of dad-to-be. A co-ed event can be fun, perhaps in a somewhat different way from a traditional one. So including men can be one of those great party ideas - check with the mom-to-be to see if she wants it that way.

Should baby showers be surprise events? Well, the mom-to-be may well be thrilled when she learns about her unexpected 'gift'! But on the other hand, she might also find it inconvenient for many reasons - after all, she is already having an exhausting, trying time. And she doesn't get to contribute to any of the party ideas, guest list, etc. So overall, maybe it is better not to have a surprise event.

Must you always give favors to guests at these events? It depends. If you're in an area where that is the norm, then by all means go ahead. However, there are also areas where favors are not expected, and are not considered appropriate. If so, stay away from giving them out. So choose your party ideas depending on local practices.

How about celebrations for the second and subsequent babies? Again, traditions change. Nowadays, it is generally considered ok to celebrate all babies, not just the first one. The differences in party ideas, planning, etc are minimal - except perhaps that gifts given for subsequent showers tend to be more of consumables like diapers, formula, etc as opposed to cribs, strollers and so on which might be given at the first event.
