are the perfect present for these occasions. They look terrific (and
hilarious too!) and the expectant mother gets a lot of stuff she will
soon need, at one shot. So if you have a party in the offing, these
guidelines on how to make diaper cakes will be of great value. Walk into baby showers with one in your hand and you're sure to draw all eyes to your centerpiece!
So let's get right into the nitty-gritty of how to make diaper cakes.
Making diaper cakes Step 1 -
Go shopping!
You'll need
to obtain these 'ingredients' with which to make your diaper cake. The
products on this shopping list will soon be 'blended' into a wonderful
assembly just right for baby showers.
- The key
ingredient that goes into the centerpiece is something babies need a
lot of - disposable diapers. I'm assuming you want to make a medium
size cake. So buy around 45-55 diapers. Of course, you can't predict
exactly how many you will use in making the cake. Any leftovers can
always be handed over to mommy-to-be.
- Your diaper cake needs a base. Get a platter of metal, cardboard or
other materials that are stiff enough. It should be around 14"-16".
- Buy ribbons of two types. One that about an inch wide - get a 10
foot length. And buy some narrower ribbon as well, about 60-80 feet
length. The narrow ribbon will be used to tie the diapers into
individual rolls.
- In making diaper cakes, you need to choose an item that will act as
a focal point for the assembly. A baby bottle is a great option for
this purpose.
- Rather than use an empty bottle, buy or make something you can fill
it with. You could make small chocolates shaped like baby items and
pack them individually before putting them into the bottle.
Alternatively, you could purchase candies.
- Buy an assortment of other baby items to use as part of the diaper
cake. Examples - bibs, rattles, pacifiers, booties, socks, blankets,
small packs of lotions & shampoo, etc.
- The final wrapping is done in good quality, clear cellophane.
- You'll also need adhesive tape.
Making diaper cakes Step 2 -
Make the individual rolls
Making
diaper cakes is easy. But it does call for some patience. The end
result, though, is certainly worth it. A baby shower cake makes a
terrific impact, and the fact that you made it yourself adds to it.
You might want to involve someone else to help you out. You'll have more fun and the job will get done faster.
Have the
narrow ribbon ready. Cut a one foot length. Roll up one diaper and tie
the ribbon around it. Do the same with your entire supply of diapers.
If you're working alone, it may be a good idea to break up the task
into multiple sittings.
Making diaper cakes Step 3 -
Make the tiers
Fill up the bottle with the candies or chocolate. You're now ready to make the top - and smallest - tier of the cake.
Arrange 5-7
rolled up diapers in a standing position around the bottle, tightly
packed. Secure them into position using a length of narrow ribbon. That
makes the top tier.
Next,
arrange about 5-8 diapers in a circle (in standing positions, packed
tightly). Tie them up with a ribbon length. Once this is done, stand
about 13-18 diapers in a circle around this small circle and use the
ribbon to secure them into place. Now the middle tier is complete.
Repeat the above process with approximately 25-33 diapers to make the bottom tier, which is the largest.
Making diaper cakes Step 4 -
Assemble the tiers
You've come a long way towards making your diaper cake. Can you feel the thrill of walking into the baby shower with the cake?
The bottom
tier should be fixed securely onto the platter using pieces of adhesive
tape. Attach the underside of the tier onto the platter, taking care
not to use too much tape. If you use tape excessively, mommy won't be
able to use the diapers!
Similarly, use adhesive tape to secure the other two tiers onto the bottom tier, one above the other.
Take out
the baby products you bought - bibs, booties, etc. Tuck these into the
ribbons, using additional ribbons if necessary. Use a dash of
creativity to get the best effect.
The grand finale
Spread a
cellophane sheet on a flat surface. Place the cake in the center.
Gather up the cellophane and bunch it up at the top of the diaper cake.
Secure in place by tying a lovely bow.
That's the
complete deal on how to make diaper cakes. As you can see, the steps
are simple and easy. You're ready to waltz into the baby shower and
delight mommy-to-be!
